Lava Dome Growing Inside Summit Crater of Indonesia’s Krakatau Volcano – Volcano – ubAlert
JAKARTA — Authorities said Krakatau volcano is growing an active lava dome inside its summit crater. A tour expedition leader reported that the dome has grown to about 100 meters wide and has two active vents that spew jets of incandescent gas. The glow from the dome is clearly visible at night, especially from the Rakata and Sertung islands. In addition, a continuous solfatara plume is rising approximately 500 meters above the summit. The expedition group also noted that more and larger fumarole fields have developed on the southern section of the cone. The recordings from the observatory of Krakatau also revealed an increase in seismic activity. On March 26, a total of 138 volcanic-tectonic quakes were recorded along with 300 long-period tremors. Scientists fear that an explosion can occur at any time.
